You can now join Thermonet Europe

In mid-2021 thermonet.eu was published with the vision of establishing an international association focused around the spread and development of thermonet across countries in Europe. The model of the vision was the national association Termonet Danmark that was founded in 2020 with the same purpose.

The energy sector was shaken in early 2022 and every country suddenly had a lot of work to do to replace oil and gas. In Denmark we experienced a huge increase in the attention thermonet got from consumers and authorities as a means of decarbonizing the heating supply. We had to put the idea of Thermonet Europe on hold up until 2024 when we finally got a clear message about the legal status of thermonets in Denmark.

At Termonet Danmark’s 2025 general assembly the board proposed to revise the name so the association is now called Thermonet Europe internationally and Termonet Danmark in Denmark. The purpose statement of the association was also changed to accommodate international expansion.
Now the purpose statement reads:

Purpose

§ 2. The purpose of the association is to promote, in a non-profit manner, the dissemination of thermonets (collective geothermal heating and cooling systems) where such installations can contribute to the transition to more climate-friendly solutions. The association may fulfill its purpose by, among other things:

  • Establishing forums for dialogue and exchange between relevant stakeholders and authorities in the field.
  • Securing resources and initiating collaboration between stakeholders who would not otherwise come together without coordinated efforts.
  • Collecting and processing data and information that can contribute to developing knowledge about thermonets.
  • Preparing and distributing information to the public.

Para. 2. An integral part of the association’s purpose is to advocate for thermonets in connection with national and international discussions on energy communities, shallow geothermal energy, and collective heating and cooling supply. If the association’s membership composition comes to consist of 2/3 international members, it is the association’s purpose to transform into an internationally oriented English-speaking association.

With these changes Thermonet Europe is now born and ready to accept members from all over Europe who are passionate about shallow geothermal district heating and cooling.
